Top Five Tips on Housekeeping for Freelancers

Unlike office-goers, freelancers have to handle the housekeeping tasks on their own without the help of support services, assistants, or teams. The housekeeping tasks do not take a lot of time if planned properly. Let us look at the most important housekeeping tasks that a freelancer has to perform.

Invoicing and keeping accounts: With a number of clients, different rates and modes of payment, different time and frequency of payments, it is important to keep proper accounts of all freelancing work. Along with keeping accounts, it is also important to generate regular invoices for all the work you do. This not only helps you keep track of your work and payments but also proves convenient to your clients.

Organizing all work: Do you often lose track of those small projects that keep coming in between the bigger and the more regular ones? More often than often, we are more organized when it comes to regular work, ignoring the small projects we work on in between. A few months later, if you are asked to show some data of the work done on a small project, will you be able to dig it out? You will not be if you have not been organizing your data properly. Organize data and projects into properly-named folders. Follow a naming convention when naming files and folders. You should be able to dig out information based on a project name or the date and time you worked on it.

Making a note of all client instruction and feedback
: A client may come to you with different requirements at different points of time even on an ongoing project. It is important to keep track on what the client wants in a project. It is advisable to make it a habit of jotting down every instruction and all feedback from your client and collate it together in one document. The instruction, even if casually mentioned in an e-mail should be properly recorded. It not only helps you be on the right track in terms of work but also helps prevent a potential argument if you and the client have different perception about the work.

Backing up data: Keeping a safe copy of your data is as important as organizing your data. The computer is an unreliable machine. A virus or a crash one day may wipe out all your data. You should keep backing up your at regular intervals. Use external hard drives and CDs to back-up your data. Keep these media at a safe place.

Stocking up resources: While working on one project, you may come across and interesting and useful piece of information that you do not need for the current project. It is important not to lose track of such information. People often bookmark online resources when they come across anything important and interesting. However, you may never remember to make use of the bookmarked resource when you actually need it. It is a better idea to keep a file (online or otherwise) with details of these resources. While working on a new project, you can look into this file for any references to your current subject.
