Default When to use .jpg, .gif instead of .png?
First all i'm not a designer so i must admit i'm newbie on this area so my question is:

When i must to use a .jpg pic, image or graphic instead of a .gif one?, when is better to work with a .png image instead of a jpg one?, wich suites better a particular need?. About size in Kbs is smaller a .gif than a .jpg? i'm a bit confussed so here's my question to designers .

Great! I love these graphics questions. Ok, a jpg is for photos, graphics that have many many colors or shades of colors. Mainly for photos you should use jpg and then you can adjust the compression to get the best result on these,
PNG can also be used if you have a program that will allow you to select true alpha color, but you maybe not be able to adjust the compression or file size as you can with jpg so I would stick with jpg for photos.
Most web graphics can be done with either gif or png. You can select 256 colors or less , the less color selected the smaller the file will be but it may become pixeleated or blurred depending on the amount of colors.
gif and png also allow for a transparent background so these are good for web graphics. Only gif will allow you to make an animation file though. So the main advantage of gif is transparent background and animation.
I mainly use PNG for all web graphics. If I want to make an animation I use gif. If I am working with a photo I use jpg.
Hope that helps a little.

Really thanks for your deep reply dude but at the end i must ask you the following to be clear:

A banner or add SHOULD be ? (jpg, gif or png)

A logo SHOULD be ? (jpg, gif or png)

An image such as screenshoots SHOULD be ? (jpg, gif or png)

Sorry if i ask twice the same thing but i saw on many sites logos made on all these formats, banners and even buttons so i would go on the right direction. BTW i appreciate your previous reply dude, thanks.

Most an banner add or logos that you see on the internet should be png or gif. These can be set to 256 colors and you will most likely get better color and a smaller file size than with jpg. I am not sure what you mean of a screen shot image ?
Maybe you mean a screen shot of an application , software etc...
This would probably be of a web based application that is most likely using gif and png. Sop I would also use gif or png for that. I only jpg for photos.
Perhaps I can get back to this thread and post some examples .

Yes that is the kind of screen shot that I thought might be referring to . You might get it pretty small and it might fine with jpg as you have done. You can set the compression down but it gets a little blurry. with a gif or png you might get better quality with same or smaller file size.
