See we have flash drive, Flash drive, Card reader, and External hard disk. All are external storage devices connected through a USB cable. There is no specific requirements for a computer to use them.

Card reader is also external storage? Ohh just got to know about it, I used to connect Nokia 6600 mobile memory card with computer through card reader, now I have Nokia N70, and it has wire, so I'm not using the card reader that often any more, anyway it's a good tool...

Most of these devices connect through USB, the Universal Serial Bus. This is the specification for how a Peripheral device connects to your computer. USB has become the standard, replacing serial and Parallel buses.
Many devices such as a camera have a Solid sate storage memory card. There are different cards that have a different bus or connection. Such as CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and Miniature Card, Since many of these had a different connector a card reader was needed to accommodate the different buses. Now most devices that have a memory card also have a USB port allowing you to connect the device to your computer and access the memory card inside. All of these devices , including thumb drives or USB drives are solid state or Flash, meaning that there are no moving parts. Hard drives, traditionally have a spinning disk and an arm that scans across the disk. But now you can buy large Solid State drives. I imagine that soon drives with moving parts will become a thing of the past because anything with moving parts means more chance for failure. |

One of the things I find difficult about external storage is having it stay reliant. For instace I bout a flash drive and it died.
