Default Site map?

What is a site map used for? Is it a good thing to have or is it just something people choose to use for personal reason.

I think that a site map makes the site easier to navigate for new visitors, I know that I use them all the time when I visit a new site and am not sure where to go.

I work with wordpress and blogging a lot. In wordpress you can ping google blogsearch and ask.com to come check out your sitemap getting you indexed much faster in the blogsearch and ask.com engines.
It gives you a jump start in visitors and also allows though easy navigation (though you can't get much easier than a blog for navigation).

Default not compulsory

Its not compulsory to have a site map.I never used and still no problems. They say site map is used so that bots have easiness in indexing whole site but still they find out.Until its a corporate type blog, you wont need a site map.Not hard and fast. You may have if you love it

Yes,sitemap isn't compulsory but it does help the spiders the search engines send to crawl your pages better and as already stated , the visitors also find it easier to navigate the pages when it's a website with a lot of content on it.However, I have known certain websites being delisted from google's results after submission of the sitemap but that might have occured because they were using some black hat seo tactics and the sitemap made it easier for Google to detect them.
